Summer travel season is just around the corner and if you are like most RV enthusiasts you are probably itching to get back out on the road, if only for a weekend. If you are looking to fill in a few free weekends on the calendar, there are local RV camping trips galore to choose from here in Iowa.
Whether you are a family with small children, outdoor sports enthusiasts or retirees looking for new experiences to enjoy, Iowa camping venues have a little bit of everything. These are a few of our favorite weekend getaways for RV and fifth wheel campers.
Okoboji Region
This region, located in the northwest corner of Iowa, is also known as the Iowa Great Lakes. It includes Iowa’s largest lake, Spirit Lake, along with these five interconnected lakes:
- West Lake Okoboji
- East Lake Okoboji
- Upper Gar
- Lower Gar
- Minnewashta
Boating, fishing, golfing or biking, whatever your outdoor sport may be, you can enjoy it in this beautiful area. As a popular tourist area, you’ll also find many great restaurants and a variety of nightlife. You’ll even find an amusement park, shopping and more. Best of all, there is plenty of RV camping available around the area.
Iowa State Fair
The Iowa State Fair is the single largest event in the state of Iowa and one of the oldest and largest agricultural and industrial expositions in the country. At the fair, you’ll enjoy amazing entertainment, exhibits and midway attractions as well as just about any food you can think of, either on or off a stick.
The Iowa State Fair Campgrounds provides more than 2,300 sites fully equipped with water and electrical hook-ups and 734 sites with sewer dumps. If you are up for this kind of adventure, camping at the fairgrounds can save you money, help you beat the traffic and give you easy access to all the comforts of home in between events.
Spook Cave and Campground in McGregor, IA
One of the great things about a family camping trip is the opportunity to mix a little bit of education in with all the fun. In McGregor, IA, kids and parents alike can learn about exploring caves, also known as spelunking (see, it’s fun just to say the word) at Spook Cave. Boat tours run through the limestone cave, letting explorers view stalactites and other natural formations. Camping and cabins are available on the grounds and there are other RV friendly campgrounds in the area.
There are also other attractions in this beautiful area along the Mississippi. Swing over to Pikes Peak State Park to enjoy some of the finest views of the Mississippi River in the upper Midwest. If you have time, you can also head north a few miles to check out the historic Effigy Mounds National Monument.
