RV Safety – Roadside Emergency Checklist

2017 a two people pull a RV on the road in Hiawatha, Iowa

Even the lightest of recreational vehicles (RVs) can put a strain on the tow vehicle and the heavier the trailer, the greater the strain. Given this reality, it’s little wonder that RV breakdowns occur fairly regularly. Of course, the first step for avoiding this unhappy fate is by thoroughly checking your vehicle, trailer and hitch before you ever pull out of the driveway.

Basic Roadside Emergency Supplies

Even with the best of preparation, breakdowns, weather events and accidents will happen to even the best of us. If you own an RV, it’s very likely that one day you’ll find yourself stranded on the side of the road, miles from the nearest service station. When that happens, you’ll want to have as many resources as possible on hand to get yourself back on the road, or at least rescued if necessary. We recommend every RVer have the following onboard in case of a RV roadside (or campsite) emergency:

  • Booster Cables
  • Waterproof LED flashlight
  • Multi-Use tool
  • Portable air compressor
  • Cash, in small denominations
  • High visibility reflective vests
  • Roadside flares
  • Tire repair kits
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Hand crank emergency radio/battery charger
  • Electric voltage meter
  • Extra engine oil
  • Extra fuses
  • Electrical tape
  • Duct tape
  • Tow straps
  • Extra windshield wipers
  • Rain poncho
  • Collapsible shovel
  • Cat litter for traction in slippery conditions
  • Wearable headlamp
  • Plastic tarp

When You Can’t DIY
