If you are thinking about buying your first recreational vehicle (RV), you have many options, starting with the type and size RV you need. To find the right RV for you is a very personal decision – what is a must-have for you could be a turn-off for someone else. Plus, your budget will also be a significant factor.
RVs are generally divided into two categories – motorized RVs (motorhomes) and towable RVs (trailers). At Ketelsen RV, we specialize in towable RVs and even within that specific category, there are still many options to choose from.
In general, towable RVs include travel trailers, fifth wheels, fold down (or pop-up) campers, and all others units that can be towed. Keep in mind that in most cases, only travel trailers and fifth wheels are practical for long-term living or traveling.
To help you make a decision we have put together a list of the most popular towable RV models with a brief description of each.
Fold Down Camper
A fold down camper, also known as a pop-up camper or a tent trailer, is a type of towable RV that collapses for easy transport and storage. Fold down campers are usually very short, light units that can be pulled by just about any car or truck. When set up, this type of trailer provides a decent amount of interior space when compared to its compact size. Sleeping capacity is generally four to eight people. The least expensive towable RV, this is popular choice for many newer RVers.
Travel Trailer
A travel trailer is larger than a fold down trailer and usually includes a full kitchen, furnace, air conditioner, bathroom including shower, and fresh water and wastewater holding tanks. Travel trailer floorplans are very popular and sleep anywhere from 6-12 people. Like a fold down camper, a travel trailer is hitched to the back of a tow vehicle. However, since most travel trailers are heavier than a fold down camper, not every vehicle can handle the load. Be sure to check and make sure your tow vehicle has enough power and torque to pull the trailer.
Fifth Wheel Trailer
A fifth wheel trailer is generally the largest of the non-motorhome RVs on the market. Fifth wheel trailers have a gooseneck front section that extends over the front of a tow vehicle, usually a pick-up truck. The hitch is located at the center of the truck bed. This is why fifth wheels can only be towed by pick-up or flatbed trucks. The weight and size of the trailer determines how big your vehicle needs to be. A fifth wheel trailer is the most popular towable among full-timers, who appreciate the extra room it affords over a travel trailer or fold down camper.
Toy Hauler
Toy haulers, also known as sport utility recreational vehicles (SURVs) are very popular these days. The “toy box”, usually located at the rear of standard travel trailers and fifth wheels, has built-in cargo doors that convert to a ramp nearly as wide as the trailer itself. Sturdy and easy to maneuver, having a SURV makes for easy loading and unloading. Just wheel or walk your cargo up the ramp and away you go. The toy hauler section of the trailer can haul motorcycles, snowmobiles, personal watercraft, golf carts – pretty much anything you need to haul. In addition, many people use the toy hauler space as a great way to add sleeping and entertaining space to your RV experience.
