Campgrounds offer several amenities that many of us take for granted. Electricity, water, fuel, communication – it’s all there when you camp in an RV friendly campground. However, if you want to break out of the camp and get back to nature, most of those amenities won’t be available so you’ll need to bring your own supplies to make the most of RV camping.
If you own an RV or 5th wheel trailer, chances are your ideas of going “primitive” is a lot less rigorous than say, your average boy scout. Still, you’ll need to be prepared when you and your RV strike out on your own.
Not a Tankless Job
Making your water and fuel supplies last can be one of the most challenging aspects of dry camping. You’ll want to be sure to prep all of your RV’s tanks before you start your trip. Fill what you need to fill (fresh water, gas and diesel, propane and generator fuel) and empty the black and grey water tanks. Then load up with as much fresh water as you can. Then conserve, conserve, conserve. This article on Water Conservation Tips for RV camping will provide some great information on how to save water while RV camping.
Good Eats and Fuel
You’ll generally want to arrive at your campsite with several days of food on board. Load up on easy to prepare campfire food and foods with a longer shelf life. While cooking over the campfire will save fuel, you can also rely on your RV’s stove and microwave when necessary.
Speaking of fuel, you’ll want to be sure to have plenty of LP Gas for refrigerator, stove, hot water and furnace. Gasoline is used to power the generator and of course, with a solar or wind system, you will rely on a combination of the elements and their charging systems. Be sure to follow all the recommended safety procedures.
